Lexus has confirmed that it will add a turbocharged four cylinder entry-level model to its RC coupe range, with the RC 200t set to join the lineup in Europe before making its way to Australia in December.

The RC 200t will be powered by the same 180kW/350Nm 2.0 litre turbocharged direct-injected four as the recently-announced IS 200t sedan, and take power to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic with paddle shifters.

And though Australian specifications and pricing have yet to be nutted out, the RC 200t will undoubtedly be priced under the existing V6-powered RC 350 - which starts at $66,000 for the base Luxury spec.

With a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 7.5 seconds the RC 200t will be more about "show" than "go", with most serious hot hatches able to outpace it. For reference, RC 350 (below) hits 100km/h in a much swifter 6.1 seconds.

But thanks to the long legs of its eight-speed automatic, the RC 200t will still be capable of hitting 230km/h.

Opt for the F Sport version, and a Torsen limited-slip differential helps improve handling under power. F Sport models also gain electronically adjustable dampers.

Like the RC 350, the RC 200t will ride on double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension, with unique settings to account for the light weight of the four-cylinder motor.

And though it may be slower than its V6 and V8 brethren, the RC 200t promises substantially better fuel economy. Lexus' claim on the European test cycle is a relatively frugal 7.2 l/100km.

Expect more details - including pricing - of the RC 200t to surface closer to its local launch in December.
