Lexus is recalling its LX470 large SUV, due to a potential problem with the side-curtain shield airbags.
A programming glitch with the airbag system could see the airbags and the seatbelt pre-tensioners activate shortly after start-up when not required.
Unnecessary firing of the airbags can result in injury to the vehicle’s occupants, although Lexus says there have been no such incidents reported in Australia.
Owners are advised that they may continue to drive their vehicles before the necessary fix is carried out, but drivers are advised not to set off until the airbag warning light in the instrument cluster has turned off - approximately four seconds after start-up.
A total of 1500 vehicles are affected by the recall, with build dates between July 2002 and June 2006.
This recall is not related to the Takata airbag recall program, which includes various Toyota and Lexus models.
