Lexus looks set to launch a new assault on the famed Nurburgring. These images of a track-enhanced version of its LFA supercar - sporting a company plate (so we are informed) - would suggest that moves are afoot by the Japanese luxury carmaker.

Based on the Nurburgring Edition, this "Nurburgring II" upgrade could be part of a plan to overtake the SRT Dodge Viper ACR, which set a 7:12:13 time on the course - just two weeks after Lexus pulled in a 7:14:64 time.

Exterior modifications appear relatively minor> There's an extra intake in the bonnet, while the tri-exhaust arrangement at the rear has been swapped for dual tips beneath each tail-light.

In place of the original exhaust tips is a new rear diffuser, and a set of - what could be - short vortex generating fins can be spotted on each rear guard, leading to the small lip spoilers above each light.

We could possibly expect the 'regular' LFA Nurburgring Edition's 420kW 4.8 litre V10 to have also picked up some enhancements.

On the styling front, the bright orange of the LFA NE has been replaced with a neon blue, while the bonnet and roof are exposed carbon-fibre.

With recent reports suggesting Lexus is now into the single digits for unsold LFA cars, it looks likely that the carmaker could be preparing a handful of very special-edition cars for serious collectors.
