As just one possible approach to a new model positioned below the large RX, the LF-NX previews what could eventually become a compact SUV.
The concept is strictly a design study for now, but more than a few of the brand's familiar styling elements are there, including the tall 'spindle' grille, L-shaped LED lights and kicked-up D-pillar.
Don't expect the complex "diamond" character lines along the concept's profile to make the leap to production however, with Lexus more likely to stick to its subtle door styling.
The rear combines elements of the current Lexus range and a performance-inspired look, with new hook-like tail lamps extending into deep vents behind the rear wheels. A diffuser-like panel dominates the rear bumper.
The cabin of the LF-NX is a little closer to reality at least, with broad leather-wrapped dash, tall silver-trimmed centre stack and brand-new steering wheel design.
Lexus describes the dash as an evolution of its 'L-Finesse' styling language, "honed over successive Lexus generations".
Power for the LF-NX is understood to be provided by the same hybrid system that drives the new ES sedan, mating a 151kW 2.5 litre four-cylinder petrol engine to an electric motor.
The concept is driven at the front wheels, although Lexus says it hasn't ruled out an all-wheel-drive model in the final production range.
Watch for more details on the LF-NX to come at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
