Lexus is slowly building a posse of performance models, introducing the thumping IS F a few years ago and following it up with the brand's first-ever supercar, the LFA.

This year, the all-new and enthusiast-targeting GS sedan will land and, if we're lucky, we might see Lexus make something of the "CT 300h" name that it trademarked a while ago. (But we doubt it.)

A couple of weeks ago, Lexus issued the first images and details for its latest project: the mean green (red) LF-LC hybrid concept.

It takes a lot from the look of the LFA and, on a technical level, there's an evolution of the Prius-driving Hybrid Synergy Drive buried somewhere beneath.

In Lexus form, and specifically for the LF-LC, it's called the Advanced Lexus Hybrid Drive system.

Toyota remains tight-lipped on the specifics, but we reckon you'll find the carmaker's new 3.5 litre V6 engine and electric motor arrangement inside.

The same package drives the new Lexus GS450h hybrid and, in the big sedan, it's good for 252kW and a 0-100km/h time of 5.6 seconds.

Shoehorned into a lighter and more svelte body with a few power tweaks, the big V6 ought to deliver sub-5 times, if not quicker.

Not quite a supercar deal (certainly it's nothing on the LFA's 412kW V10 and 3.7 second run), but not bad. Not bad at all.

Lexus will give the LF-LC a proper unveiling at this month's Detroit Auto Show.
