Lexus took the better part of 10 years to transform its LFA supercar from an idea into a roadgoing reality, delivering five concepts and withholding production-confirmation until 2009.
According to a new report by US paper Wards Auto, overwhelming interest in the coupe has brought Lexus and parent Toyota to quietly confirm production plans.
Speaking with the paper at an event in the US, Lexus marketing boss Brian Smith reportedly let the cat out of the bag.
“That was a concept car, and I think it surprised everybody, including us, when Japan said due to overwhelming response they decided to do it,” Smith said. “It’s a huge win.”
With the SC coupe-cabriolet now retired, there is potential for the LF-LC to enter as a more affordable option, replacing the pricey and limited-production LFA.
With BMW well into the testing phase of its low-slung i8 hybrid sports car, the case for a production LF-LC all-but makes itself.
Like the various concepts that grew into the limited-edition LFA production car, the LF-LC would undoubtedly go through its own transformation before hitting showrooms.
Specifications for the LF-LC concept have not been revealed, except that there is a petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain concealed in its bold red body, producing upwards of 370kW.
Without those finnicky details, it is difficult to say where a production model would sit in the Lexus range, or how much it would cost to take home.
If given the green light, the LF-LC could be in production within the next three years.
