LEXUS IS200T TRADEMARKED
Recent interviews have confirmed that the new IS sedan will be the second model to feature the small 2.0 litre turbo mill - and it appears that new variant now has a name.
As expected, that model will be known as the IS 200t, mirroring the badging to be worn by the turbocharged NX 200t SUV.
According to paperwork obtained by American website Motor Authority, Lexus filed to register the name ‘IS 200t’ with the United States Patent and Trademark Office this week.
If accurate, this news puts to rest speculation that Lexus could revive the ‘IS 300’ badge or replace the current IS 250’s V6 engine with the new turbo unit.
It remains unclear, however, where the new IS 200t model will slot into the current new-generation IS range.
A ‘smaller’ badge number would ordinarily suggest an entry-level position, but with 175kW and 350Nm on tap, the new turbo engine easily outstrips the current IS 250’s 153kW/252Nm 2.5 litre engine.
We could instead see the 250 badge and engine retired from the IS range, focusing instead on the turbocharged IS 200t, the IS 300h hybrid and the naturally-aspirated IS 350.
Whatever path Lexus takes, we can likely expect to know more toward the end of this year or early in 2015.
