Out of the rumour mill and onto the merry-go-round, reports of a top-shelf V8 version of the Lexus GS are back in the press this week.
A new report out of the UK draws on a telling interview with Lexus product boss Karl Schlicht, suggesting that the Japanese luxo brand is looking hard at a rival for the large hero cars of BMW, Mercedes and Audi.
Speaking with Britain's Autocar magazine, Schlicht reportedly confirmed that while nothing is locked in, he is actively pushing for a GS F flagship model.
“With a GS F, we would have a solid pyramid structure of performance models,” Schlicht said.
So, as before, there's nothing new here except confirmation that yes, all but the carmaker's accountants are keen for a new champion model in the large luxury line-up.
For now, all we have is speculation. We could possibly look forward to a detuned version of the LFA supercar's V10 engine, although Lexus might follow in BMW M5's footsteps with a V8, which it would share with the new IS F.
Delivering an all-new V8 could also see the carmaker offer pure F versions of its larger car, from the LS through to the RX SUVs - just as BMW offers M versions of the X5 and X6.
If there's anything to suggest a GS F will eventually debut, it's that Lexus is looking to the new GS to steal buyers from its European rivals.
Until we see a genuine high-powered performer, BMW and Merc buyers likely won't be going anywhere.
