Lexus Coupe Under Consideration: Report

The next-generation Lexus GS sedan is less than one month away from its global debut but new reports this week suggest we may see a coupe join the line-up in the next two years.

According to US magazine Edmunds, an internal push at Lexus to improve the brand's "emotional qualities" has inspired the plan. If true, the new Lexus coupe will no doubt be hunting for the likes of the Audi A5 Coupe, the BMW 650i and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe.

Lexus product planner Ben Mitchell reportedly told the magazine that he'd like to see a coupe roll off the Lexus line, and that the brand is undertaking a "fairly active study of coupe opportunities". 

While the current IS sedan has something of a coupe-like profile, Lexus has no contender in the prestige coupe market - large, medium or otherwise.

The upcoming GS is the only all-new sedan Lexus has confirmed for the near future. However, the absence of a coupe in the Lexus stable, and the success of Audi, BMW and M-B with their swoopy two-door contenders, has had some speculating that a coupe from Lexus is only a matter of time. The new GS sedan being the logical basis.

A coupe variant in the next IS range could prove the stronger seller however, with the company already offering a two-door hardtop convertible in the current IS line-up.

The possibility of an IS Coupe - which would take on the 3 Series Coupe - should not be discounted.

Regardless of the platform, if a coupe is in the works, Lexus will likely move to plug the hole quickly. Expect to see news over the coming year.
