Land Rover is reportedly planning to give its Defender off-roader a 'proper' send-off, with a limited edition model in the pipeline.

The UK's Autocar reports that the Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations team will be tasked with creating the farewell model, which could include powered-up diesel engines.

Special Operations and former Land Rover boss John Edwards reportedly said that Defender fans will not be forgotten, when the model - as we know it - slips into retirement.

Mr Edwards said Special Operations could continue to play a part in future Defender projects for existing owners, through an ongoing program in its heritage division.

Beyond the Defender, 2015 could bring a ‘Project 8’ for Special Operations as the group looks for its next ‘Project 7’.

Project 7 is the special edition Jaguar F-TYPE that debuted as a concept at the Goodwood Festival in 2013, before a road-going version was confirmed for production this year.

Next year could also see the ‘SVR’ badge on the back of a Jaguar XE, with reports suggesting a BMW M3-fighting V8 performance version is on the cards.

Mr Edwards said the carmaker would need to “define the DNA” of the Big Cat before any SVR Jaguars make their way into showrooms.
