Land Rover may be planning its own special farewell for the iconic Defender 4WD, but German 'enhancement-haus' Startech is planning a party of its own.

Startech is to Jaguar Land Rover as Brabus is to Mercedes-AMG (it is itself a member of the Brabus group).

And now, Startech has unveiled its Defender swansong called the ‘Sixty8’, which is limited to 68 examples to signify the Defender’s 68-year production run.

The Sixty8 is based on Land Rover’s Defender 110 Wagon, and can be optioned with either five or seven seats.

On the outside, the Sixty8 features a ‘Corris Grey Metallic’ body with a ‘Santorini Black’ roof, while an aluminium underride guard with ‘SIXTY8’ logo and tinted glass complement the look.

The limited edition model also gets LED lighting all around and black 18-inch wheels wearing BF Goodrich all-terrain tyres.

Inside, the Sixty8 gets tan light brown and ebony black leather trim, along with heated sports seats with ‘diamond’ quilting.

There’s also an Alpine multimedia system with a 6.1-inch touchscreen, 3D navigation and a reversing camera, along with a sports steering wheel and aluminium shift knob, emergency brake lever and pedals.

The same 2.2 litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine from the ‘regular’ Defender is retained with its 90kW/360Nm output, matched with a six-speed manual transmission and Land Rover’s 4WD system with differential lock.

The Sixty8 reaches 100km/h from rest in a leisurely 15.8 seconds, and when it gets there, it isn’t far off its top speed of 145km/h. Best combined fuel consumption is rated at 10.2 l/100km.

The Startech Sixty8 is on sale now, priced in Europe from €67,990 (AU$102,736) for the five-seater and €69,900 for the seven-seater (AU$105,622).

Startech isn’t the only carmaker to build a ‘tribute’ model to the Defender, with Kahn unveiling its Flying Huntsman 105 Longnose earlier this year.
