Land Rover has revealed its hand for next month's Frankfurt Motor Show, releasing details and a pair of images of the DC100 Concept.

According to Land Rover, the DC100 represents a modern interpretation of the brand's iconic workhorse. And with a 2015 debut locked in for the new Defender, this new concept offers a first look at what's to come.

"Replacing the iconic Defender is one of the biggest challenges in the automotive design world; it is a car that inspires people worldwide," Land Rover design boss Gerry McGovern said.

"This isn't a production-ready concept but the beginning of a four-year journey to design a relevant Defender for the 21st century."

The Indian-owned British carmaker says it will work with existing and potential customers to develop the concept further, massaging it into the desert-bashing off-roader the next Defender must be.

Land Rover's global brand director, John Edwards, said that the key to the new Defender will be to ensure that it remains "true to its heritage, while meeting the requirements of a changing global market."

For now, little else is known about the concept, or whether its innards are as new as its outsides. With a debut set for the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 13, all will be revealed soon.
