Lamborghini has taken some of the mystery out of rumours surrounding its plans for a third model line, confirming that it will reveal an SUV at next week's Beijing Auto Show.

Teased here with a single streaked profile illustration, the concept will carry the same sharp angles and stretched profile featured across the carmaker's supercar lineage.

The news follows reports in recent months that have pointed to a new model joining the Lamborghini range, with most speculation focusing on either a Estoque-inspired four-door coupe, or a sleek SUV.

News last week also revealed that Lamborghini has registered the trademark 'Deimos', pointing to one possible moniker for the Beijing-bound SUV.

Speaking with German paper Handelsblatt last week, Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann reportedly confirmed the SUV concept's coming, describing the showcar as a tool to measure buyer interest in a production version.

High-margin luxury SUVs are big sellers in China, and the market is already Lamborghini’s second largest after the US.

If the SUV is approved, it is unlikely to hit showrooms until at least 2017. "It usually takes 48 months until an all-new vehicle arrives at dealers," Winkelmann is quoted by Handelsblatt.

Should the SUV fail to win the hearts of its Beijing audience, we can likely expect Lamborghini to either take another swing (as Bentley will do with its failed EXP 9 F unveiling), or revisit the idea of a Panamera-based four-door coupe.
