Reports of a Roadster version of Lamborghini's new Aventador supercar have begun.

With topless versions already confirmed for Ferrari's 458 Italia and the Pagani Huayra - and Porsche's 918 Spyder on the way - it was only a matter of time.

Lamborghini itself has yet to confirm development of an Aventador Roadster, but according to Italian website Autoblog.it, company insiders have assured that the project is underway.

It remains to be seen which of the superoadsters will appear first, but with the new Ferrari already a year into production, a 458 Italia will likely be the first to arrive.

As for the Aventador, strong sales have seen the order books full for the next 18 months, meaning a Roadster version of the LP 700-4 probably won't appear until late next year the earliest.

The Aventador is powered by Lamborghini's new V12 engine, producing 525kW (700hp) and 690Nm of torque - an increase of around 30kW and 30Nm over its predecessor.

Combined with a seven-speed ISR (Independent Shifting Rods) transmission - the first to be used with a V12 engine - the Aventador rockets to 100km/h in 2.9 seconds, making it 0.3 seconds quicker than the most powerful model offered in the Murcielago line.
