Fire up the rumour mill, because the latest whisper is that Maserati could introduce its own version of LaFerrari. A trident-badged LaMaserati, if you will.
To be sure, Maserati's halo car would never be allowed to outdo LaFerrari. And, according to the UK's Car magazine, drivetrain differences would ensure 'LaMaserati' is hot - but not quite Ferrari hot.
Maserati's version would reportedly do away with the hybrid system that stars in LaFerrari, focusing either on the 6.3 litre V12 engine, or an enhanced quad-turbo version of its 3.8 litre V8.
There is precedent for a LaFerrari-derived Maserati, too, with the limited-production MC12 supercar drawing on the Enzo but adding its own unique engineering and styling.
As would likely be the case with any new offering, the Enzo was both faster and more powerful than its Maserati MC12 offshoot.
Without the hybrid system in play, the new Maserari could be lighter than its Ferrari donor, but Maranello would likely also mandate specific performance targets to limit the car's potential (but not its desirability).
As with the MC12, the new Maserati would get its own unique styling, while retaining the chassis and general components of LaFerrari.
If this new Maserati is indeed in the works, expect it to launch with a price tag north of $1.3 million.
