Kia has released a new teaser for its coming electric or electric-assisted concept, based on the Soul crossover.
This latest teaser, a tightly-cropped view of the concept’s rear, also brings the first confirmation of its name: Trail’ster.
Details for the Trail’ster have yet to be revealed, although recent reports have suggested we will see a new all-wheel-drive version of Kia’s existing all-electric Soul EV, which entered production overseas last year.
However, it now appears likely that Kia is planning a version of its regular Soul that partners a petrol or diesel engine with an electric motor.
This kind of system, which has also been demonstrated as a Subaru concept and with Peugeot Citroen’s Hybrid4 system, would see the front axle driven by a conventional engine and the rear wheels driven by an electric motor, creating a hybridised all-wheel-drive configuration.
As for its styling, the Trail’ster concept will boast a refreshed take on the new Soul’s looks, along with a ruggedised body-kit and, Kia says, a fully retractable canvas roof.
Watch for the Kia Soul Trail’ster to debut next week at the Chicago Auto Show.
