Kia’s second-generation Sportage SUV has been recalled in Australia this week, due to potential problem with the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU).

The carmaker has identified a weakness with the wiring harness connector assembly, which may allow moisture and other contaminants to corrode the connector pins.

Should this occur, the electronic stability control warning lamp may be displayed in the instrument cluster. In worst case examples, a fire hazard could be present.

No incidents from this issue have been reported in Australia at this stage.

The recall affects specific KM Sportage models from 2008 and 2009, with 531 vehicles on the recall list for Australia.

In November last year, Kia also recalled its midsized Optima sedan in Australia due to a potential problem with the driveshafts.

Kia will attempt to contact affected owners shortly, but any owner wishing to learn more about the latest round of recalls should contact their local dealer.
