Kia has issued a recall in Australia for its Sorento SUV and Optima midsizer due to potential engine damage.

The carmaker says the 2.4 litre four-cylinder petrol engine may have been subject to machining errors during manufacturing, and that bearings may suffer premature wear as a result.

Prolonged use could eventually result in a ‘knocking’ sound from the engine, and perhaps the ‘Check Engine’ or oil pressure warning lights will illuminate in the instrument cluster.

Further use could see the engine fail suddenly and without further warning, potentially creating a hazard for the vehicle occupants and other road users.

Affected models include the 2011-2014 TF Optima (4963 cars affected in Australia) and the 2013 XM Sorento (16 vehicles affected).

If this recall sounds familiar, that’s because the same engine has also been subject to a similar recall in Australia from sister brand Hyundai.

Kia will attempt to contact affected owners shortly, but any owner wishing to learn more about the latest round of recalls should contact their local dealer.
