Kia has confirmed that Australia will be the first market outside of Europe to introduce the Pro_Cee'd GT to its local line-up.

Announced at the Geneva Motor Show today, the three-door hot hatch's local debut will make it the brand's first true performance offering in Australian.

"It is incredibly exciting news for us," Kia Motors Australia Chief Operating Officer Tony Barlow said.

"This is a whole new level of performance for Kia Australia and the fact that it is wrapped in a sensational package of style and safety is icing on the cake."

Timing for the hot hatch's Australian launch is still to be confirmed however, with European sales not scheduled to begin until the middle of this year.

"For the moment it is exciting enough to know we will get the car and that when we do it will undergo the full ride and handling localisation."

Power for the Pro_Cee'd GT is provided by a 1.6 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 150kW and 265Nm of torque.

Matched to a six-speed manual transmission only, the turbo four sends power to the front wheels.

Kia promises a 0-100km/h time of 7.9 seconds - those aren't Golf GTI numbers (6.9 seconds in current Mk6 form), but if priced right, the Pro_Cee'd won't struggle to find friends.

Along with the requisite styling and aero tweaks, the GT gets 18-inch alloy wheels as standard, with a braking package that includes 300x28mm ventilated discs up front and 262x10mm solid discs at the rear.

Power steering is electric assisted; suspension is a conventional set-up with MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link rear, but with handling enhanced through stiffer springs, sports shocks and a thicker anti-roll bar.

Expect the Pro_Cee'd GT to hit Australia later this year or early in 2014.
