Kia has just dropped the first of hint of what to expect from a new crossover-style vehicle, expected to surface in the first half of next year.
Early details of the powertrain have already been revealed at Hyundai’s annual powertrain expo, so we know that the Niro, like the Ioniq, will be powered by a 1.6 litre, Atkinson cycle, four-cylinder petrol engine capable of 77kW and 147Nm.
That will be linked to an as yet undisclosed electric powertrain, with power and capacity for the electric system yet to be revealed. The Niro is expected to arrive with a normal hybrid powertrain first, but may add a plug-in hybrid version later.
Non-hybrid pertrol, and diesel versions (most likely for the European market) are also possibilities to join the range, depending on market preferences. The Niro is slated as a global model for Kia.
While the teaser sketches don’t provide a clear glimpse of the production version, the Niro will feature a five-door body, unlike the three-door concept.
The huge wheels and super-low roofline are likely to be tamed down somewhat in the metal.
