Kia fans in Australia may have noticed the GT4 Stinger concept popping up on their television screens lately as part of a new advertising campaign from the Korean carmaker.
This move has raised more than a few eyebrows among automotive industry observers, bringing speculation that the 2014 Detroit Auto Show won’t be the last place the car will be seen.
So does a TV ad mean we can expect to see the GT4 Stinger rolling down the production line as a road-going GT model for Kia anytime soon?
“It was a brand ad that screened around the Australian Open Tennis tournament,” Kia Australia’s Senior Product Manager, Jeff Shafer, said.
“We used some footage of the Stinger just to show where we’re headed as a company. But the thing I love about working at Kia is that the concepts we see have a real chance of production. I don’t know that I’ve seen too many that are just pure whimsy in terms of styling.”
“The Stinger got a great reaction at the motor show when it was first launched. I know that, certainly as a brand, we’re interested in getting some cars to market that are a bit performance oriented and sporty. Whether that’s something like the Pro_C’eed GT or something bespoke like the Stinger or a GT car..?”
While it seems the GT4 Stinger is yet to be signed, sealed and delivered as a future full-scale production model (or something like it), the car has a key Kia figure in its corner.
Kia’s John Kill said the carmaker’s design boss, Peter Schreyer, has a “real big ambition” to introduce a GT-like model to the line-up.
“Peter has bought a lot to the company obviously in terms of his working with design,” Mr Shafer said.
“Add to that the fact that he’s a Vice President, he also has a strong voice outside of the design area and what’s happening with models that get the tick to go into production - so that’s great to see.”
