UK mag Auto Express reports that the car will be the halo model for the Korean brand, encompassing design chief Peter Schreyer’s talents in their purest form yet.
“It will mark Kia out as a genuine cut-price rival to the German premium brands, and be the crowning glory of Schreyer’s revamped line-up” an unnamed Kia insider told Auto Express.
“Every company needs a halo car. The coupe market is dominated by German brands, and the GT is Kia’s first step – it’s like putting a foot in the door of the club”, Schreyer said at the concept’s unveiling.
A 3.3 litre turbocharged V6 was used in the concept, but the K9/Genesis/Equus underpinnings would also enable four and eight cylinder options, along with diesel and petrol-electric hybrid drivetrains.
It’s too early to say whether Australia would see such a model, but with the next-generation Hyundai Genesis confirmed for local availability, the odds are perhaps leaning towards "maybe".
