Kia is considering adding a wagon and coupe variant to a new range spearheaded by its recent GT Concept, according to reports out of the US this week.
Citing unnamed sources (which gives the whole thing a whiff of rumour-mongering), US website Edmunds reports that Kia's top brass are eager to get a full GT range into showrooms, as a "more affordable alternative" to Audi's A5 and A7 lines.
The GT Concept is powered by a turbocharged 3.3 litre V6 engine, delivering 290kW and 534Nm of torque. Power is transferred to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Kia itself has offered little in the way of confirmation that the GT is destined for production, although chief designer Peter Schreyer described the concept as a "strong statement from Kia, we are ready to fast-forward to an all-new chapter".
On a technical level, there is not much holding the GT back from production.
With the Hyundai Genesis Coupe's existing rear-wheel-drive platform and a selection of powerful four-, six- and eight-cylinder engines to choose from, the parts are all there.
Whether buyers outside of Korea are ready for a premium Kia product, on the other hand, remains to be seen.
