Kia has confirmed this week that its 2011 GT four-door coupe concept, or a model like it, is under “serious consideration” for production.
Responding to reports in the past week that the sleek GT has been given the green light for production, the company issued the following statement:
“Although official confirmation on plans for mass production cannot be given at this time, we at Kia are seriously considering the introduction of a sporty, brand image leading model in the near future that would be the most high performance Kia vehicle to date.”
This latest development marks the first hint of production from Kia headquarters, with previous reports pointing only to vague or anonymous 'insider' comments.
It remains to be seen, however, if the new hero model will be a version of the fastback GT sedan - now three years old in its current concept form - or an entrant in another segment.
We could instead see the more recent GT4 Stinger sports coupe (pictured top of article) transformed into a production offering.
But, with the GT boasting a (slightly) more practical design, and with the US market likely to be its key focus, Kia could instead skew toward the larger four-door coupe as a smart companion to the K900/Quoris sedan.
As for timing, the carmaker has steered clear of confirming a launch window. But, if “near future” is anything to go by, we might see a preview appear at next year’s Detroit Auto Show.
