Jeep's new Cherokee SUV could soon welcome a new flagship, according to rumblings that an SRT model is in the works.

Chrysler enthusiast site Allpar reports that an unnamed source in the company has confirmed the coming of a performance model.

Details are predictably vague, although the report suggests that a turbocharged 3.0 litre version of Chrysler's Pentastar V6 could be destined for the SUV.

In its regular form, the Cherokee will be offered with a 137kW 2.4 litre petrol engine, and the more powerful 3.2 litre 199kW/316Nm Pentastar V6.

For an SRT version to earn its place on top of the range, the flagship would need to offer around 250kW or more. We could even see the 300kW turbo 3.0 litre V6 from Maserati's new Ghibli sedan.

All-wheel-drive would of course feature, and ZF's new nine-speed automatic transmission would also star.

For now, Australian Jeep fans can look forward to the regular Cherokee's arrival later this year. Local specs and pricing is still to be confirmed, however.
