Jeep’s all-new Cherokee line-up has been given a key boost this week, with the Australian debut of a diesel model.

Available now in limited numbers at Jeep dealerships, the diesel Cherokee Limited is the range’s priciest offering at $49,000 - sitting above both the $44,000 petrol Limited and the $47,500 Trailhawk.

Power in the new model is provided by the same 2.0 litre MultiJet2 four-cylinder diesel available with the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, delivering 125kW at 4000rpm and 350Nm from 1750rpm.

Unlike the Alfa’s six-speed auto setup, however, the Limited’s diesel engine is mated to the same new ZF-developed nine-speed shifter found in other Cherokee models.

Like the V6 petrol Limited, the new diesel model sees motivation sent to all four wheels through Jeep's Active II AWD system that boasts low-range and five Selec-terrain driving modes.

Stop/Start is standard with the small diesel, as is a 'rear axle disconnect' feature that reduces friction and energy loss to improve fuel consumption.

Fuel consumption with this arrangement is listed at a low 5.8 l/100km, compared to 10.0 l/100km with the 3.2 litre petrol V6 Limited and 8.3 l/100km with the smaller 2.4 litre petrol unit.

Standard features include 18-inch aluminum wheels, auto headlight levelling, leather upholstery with heated front seats, Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen with navigation, front and rear parking sensors with reversing camera and an Alpine nine-speaker surround sound system.

Safety is sorted with seven airbags (front seats multistage air bags, side bags, window bags, driver side knee air bag), ESC (Electronic Stability Control) with ERM (rollover mitigation) and ABS (anti-lock brake system) with both on-road and off-road calibration.

Optional safety tech also includes Forward Collision Warning-Plus, ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control-Plus, Lane Departure Warning-Plus, Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path Detection.

Braked and unbraked towing capacity with the diesel is rated at 2393kg and 450kg respectively.

As with other Cherokee models, rear storage is listed at 700 litres with all seats in place, rising to 1555 litres with the rear seats folded.

Note: Australian photos still to come.
