Jaguar has updated its big XJ limo for the coming 2016 model year, revealed today ahead of an Australian debut set for November.
The XJ’s freshening marks the second major update since its 2009 debut, when it launched in London with Australian supermodel Elle Macpherson on hand to emphasise Jaguar’s focus on sleek lines and a curvaceous profile.
When it hits Australia in November, the refreshed XJ will be priced from $199,900, marking an $1100 increase over the price of entry into the current range.
By comparison, BMW’s outgoing 7 Series starts at $206,200, while the big Audi A8 begins at $208,900 and the new S-Class kicks off at $196,500. Japanese rival Lexus offers its updated LS from $189,430.
Styling changes to the XJ range are relatively limited, focusing on new integrated LED daytime lights at both ends, along with a larger and more upright grille inspired by the new XE and XF sedans.
There’s also a lightly re-styled front bumper, while the rear bumper has been updated to include a gloss black valance and a slender chrome insert, along with new oval-shaped exhaust tips.
Inside, there’s new and softer materials with quilted leather seats, along with an eight-inch touchscreen display in the dash and a larger 12.3-inch instrument cluster display behind the steering wheel.
With the new system, Jaguar promises "seamless" Android and iOS connectivity and a fast-response navigation design.
There's also a leather headliner, lit stainless steel treadplates, oak inlay veneer and individual seats with sliding and massaging functions.
In the rear, there's a new entertainment system with dual 10.2-inch folding HD displays.
A new electric power-assisted steering features, promising greater responsiveness and reduced fuel consumption. Jaguar has also added its All-Surface Progress Control (ASPC) technology for greater control in low-traction areas.
There’s also a new R-Sport pack that adds enhanced styling to the outside and bucket seats in the cabin, rounded out with a haul of piano black highlights.
Like its Range Rover stablemate, the XJ range now also boasts a top-shelf Autobiography model in long-wheelbase form only, adding 20-inch alloys and a suite of interior and exterior highlights.
Powertrains include an updated 3.0 litre V6 diesel that produces more power at 221kW and 700Nm - up from 202kW and 600Nm in the outgoing model.
Jaguar claims a 0-100km/h time of 6.2 seconds for the diesel, with fuel consumption rated at 5.7 l/100km.
Petrol options continue into the new model year, including the 250kW/450Nm 3.0 litre V6, along with 375kW/625Nm and 404kW/680Nm versions of a 5.0 litre V8.
