Jaguar is planning to take its upcoming F-Type sports car GT3 racing, according to a new report.

British magazine AutoExpress suggests that the model will form the basis for a £20 million (AU$30.6 million) factory-backed customer racing program as early as the 2014 season.

The report also suggests that the racing F-Type will use a 373kW version of the upcoming C-X75 hybrid supercar’s 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol engine.

As with the C-X75’s hybrid drivetrain, the engine is said to be being developed by Jaguar’s technical partner, Williams F1.

If the GT3 program reaches fruition, it could spawn a flagship performance version of the F-Type, similar to the GT3 version of Porsche’s 911.

This report comes after the F-Type’s road-going debut at the weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed - though still in prototype form, and still wearing camouflage.

The production F-Type is set for a full unveiling at the Paris Motor Show in September.
