Jaguar Land Rover’s new-generation ‘Ingenium’ petrol engines have now commenced production and will be in global showrooms from next year.

JLR’s highly-praised Ingenium 2.0-litre diesel engine was launched in 2015.

Following the trend of the diesel, the all-new petrol engines use a common architecture (500cc per cylinder displacement) to provide flexibility and scaleability to cater for derivatives from compact sedans to full-size SUVs.

Combined with breakthrough internal technologies including an electrohydraulic valvetrain, a twin scroll turbocharger with ceramic ball bearings and an integrated exhaust manifold, JLR tips the lightweight aluminium Ingenium petrol engine family to be 25 per-cent more powerful and 15 per-cent more fuel efficient than the engines they replace.

But there’s more to come from JLR with news of the ‘Transcend’ transmission research project.

Partly funded by the UK Government, this project has an end-goal of kick-starting automotive transmission development and production in Britain (currently many transmissions are sourced from foreign specialists).

At the heart of the Transcend project is a cutting-edge eight-speed automatic transmission with a wide ratio spread of 20 - claimed to be more than double the spread of current eight-speed autos.

Smart design and state-of-the art manufacturing facilities will see the final product also more compact and up to 20kgs lighter than the current crop of eight-speeders.

Designed to mate with engines installed longitudinally, JLR says the Transcend transmission will be suitable for either rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive vehicles, making it applicable to future application in both Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles
