Jaguar will reveal its new fast-bake F-Type roadster at next month's Paris Motor Show, just months after it first appeared as a camouflaged concept.

Don't be fooled, however: if the F-Type's gestation seems unusually short, it's only because Jag has been plotting its sharp new convertible in top-secret for the better part of a decade.

Reports had given fans plenty to hope for, but it was the unveiling of last year's C-X16 coupe concept that offered the first real clue.

Since revealing the C-X16 and the vinyl-wrapped F-Type preview, the Tata-backed Brits have been far from secretive about the future.

Already confirmed for the topless tourer are two high-performance engines, one an unspecified supercharged 5.0 litre V8, the other a 280kW supercharged 3.0 litre V6.

Jaguar currently offers two versions of its super V8, one producing 375kW in the XKR coupe, XFR and XJ, the other cooking with 405kW in the top-shelf XKR-S.

We could also see the carmaker's new 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine appear in an entry-level version of the F-Type, but for now, only the larger six- and eight-cylinder mills have been confirmed.

A recent video series has also offered plenty of hype-building quotes, with Jag design boss Ian Callum commenting that the F-Type team were given licence to be "as fearless as we want."

He describes the car as "one of the most significant sports cars of this century, of this decade."

Jaguar's past may be as chequered as the F-Type's camouflage, but one thing is certain: the big cat knows performance. This will be one you can hold your breath for.
