Jaguar's scintillating new F-TYPE roadster is now on sale in Australia, debuting this week after first appearing here at last year's Sydney Motor Show.

A long-rumoured coupe version - inspired again by the C-X16 concept that kicked it all off - is also expected to appear in the near future. But, for now, say hello to Jaguar's sharp new droptop.

Priced from $138,645 (plus on-roads), the F-TYPE roadster is available in three forms: a pair of supercharged 3.0 litre V6 options and the $201,945 supercharged 5.0 V8.

The F-TYPE's starting price also puts it between rival Porsche's Boxster S and 911 models, signalling Jaguar's intentions in the local market.

Models

Opening the range is the supercharged 3.0 litre V6 F-TYPE, producing 250kW at 6500rpm and 450Nm between 3500 and 5000rpm. In the middle of the three-car range is another super 3.0 litre V6, boosting power to 280kW and 460Nm.

At the top of the trio is the hero 5.0 litre supercharged V8, smashing out a hefty 364kW at 6500rpm and 625Nm from 2500 through to 5500rpm.

Jaguar says the entry 3.0 V6 will hit 100km/h in 5.3 seconds, while the supercharged six gets there four-tenths of a second quicker.

Top speeds are 260km/h and 275km/h respectively, and fuel consumption is listed at 9.0 and 9.1 l/100km.

Go for the super V8 and you'll get a 4.3 second 0-100km/h run, hitting that on your way to a 300km/h top speed. Fuel use for the V8 is listed at a low 11.1 l/100km.

All three versions are equipped with an eight-speed Quickshift automatic transmission, with no manual on offer.

We could see the carmaker's new 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine appear in a future entry-level version of the F-TYPE, and a top-shelf 520kW RS model has also been reported.

Features

Standard features on the entry model include 18-inch alloy wheels, suede/leather sports seats, eight-inch display monitor, satellite navigation and 380W audio, keyless entry and start.

The mid-range F-TYPE S gets 19-inch wheels, high-performance brakes, Adaptive Dynamics suspension and active sports exhaust with centre-mounted tips, a limited-slip differential.

Skip to the F-TYPE V8 S and there's 20-inch wheels, the Jaguar Super Performance Braking System, Active Dynamics suspension and active sports exhaust, and an electronic active differential.

Options include bi-xenon and adaptive headlights, reverse-traffic detection, blindspot monitoring and lane change warning.

Safety features include dynamic stability control, pedestrian contact sensors and an automatic anti-rollover bar.
