It works for Volkswagen Group – think Touareg and Bentley Bentayga – so it’s fair enough for Fiat Chrysler (FCA) chief Sergio Marchionne to confirm his intercontinental brands will expand their platform sharing which started with the Fiat 500X and Jeep Renegade.

Now Marchionne has told North American media that the all-new Alfa Romeo Giulia’s rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive platforms will be shared not only with fellow Italian brand Maserati but will cross the Atlantic for use by Jeep, Dodge and maybe Chrysler.

FCA is in the midst of re-launching the iconic Alfa Romeo brand – the ground-breaking Stelvio SUV’s northern hemisphere launch is imminent – and platform sharing is one way of amortizing the costs involved.

Marchionne confirmed an investment in Alfa Romeo so far of US$2.7 billion (A$3.5 billion) with a total of €5.0 billion (A$7.05 billion) booked-up until 2020 to underwrite up to eight all-new models.
