Italian Military Cops: Powered By Lotus

Italy's military and civilian police force, the Carabinieri, has taken delivery this week of two specially-modified Lotus Evora S sports cars.

Equipped with refrigeration units behind the front seats, the two police-blue Evoras will be utilised for blood and organ transport. The cars are on loan to the Arma dei Carabnieiri for the next two years, and will be based in Rome and Milan.

“Everyone knows that Italy has more than its fair share of high profile sports car manufacturers so it is a real honour for a relatively small British brand to be in this position," Lotus CEO Dany Bahar said.

The cars are trimmed with the force's usual blue-and-white scheme, along with red highlights a and roof-mounted light bar.

After an incident in 2009 that saw a Police-enhanced Lamborghini Gallardo written off in a non-fatal road accident, the Carabinieri will this time ensure that only Lotus-trained drivers are allowed behind the wheel of the Evora S.

"Not just anyone can drive these cars, we carefully selected some of our team to attend a driver training session at the new test track at Lotus’ headquarters in Norfolk, where they learnt all about the very special characteristics and incredible potential of the cars,” Carabinieri spokesperson Colonel Marco Minicucci said.

When the Evora S cars return to Britain from their two-year secondment, they may be headed straight for the company museum. The Lotus flagship is due to be replaced in the next few years, and a comprehensive engine and styling overhaul is expected before then.
