Suzuki and Toyota have long been at odds on the question of which carmaker pioneered the compact SUV segment, with both claiming honours for the Vitara and RAV4 models.

While those two offerings have beefed up over the years, Suzuki's tiny Jimny remains a true pocket-sized contender and a favourite among off-roading enthusiasts.

Whether the Jimny can hang onto that claim for much longer is the question, with the current model set to celebrate its 14th birthday next month.

For its part, Suzuki has remained quiet on the topic of a new Jimny, until this week.

Through its Indian offshoot Maruti Suzuki, the Japanese carmaker has released four teaser images for a new compact SUV concept that will debut at next week's Delhi Auto Expo.

Of the four teasers, one image offers a solid styling connection with the current Jimny, in the form of its familiar slotted grille design.

Other (less familiar) styling features for the concept will include Audi-like headlights, Volvo-inspired vertical taillights and large five-spoke sports wheels.

Whether the concept will be hailed as a preview for a next-generation Jimny is unclear, but the birthday timing couldn't be better, and the compact SUV segment has never been stronger.
