Luxury carmaker Infiniti made its mark by finding success in the competitive US market, but its roots are in Japan with parent company Nissan.

You might think then that its global headquarters would be based in Tokyo or California, but you'd be wrong.

Infiniti has announced this week that it will base its global operations in Hong Kong, representing a gateway to China, where the marque expects to find a big chunk of its forecast 500,000 annual sales.

While China is one of the most important new markets for Infiniti, the brand has also established operations in Europe, Russia, the Middle East, South East Asia and, with sales to kick off next year, here in Australia.

"As Infiniti grows its presence in the global luxury markets of North America, Europe, China and South East Asia, we selected Hong Kong as the optimum location for our new global Infiniti headquarters,” Andy Palmer, Executive Vice President of Nissan said.

“We see an opportunity to reinforce Asian hospitality within the Infiniti brand, distinct from both Nissan and our facing luxury competitors. We are proud to be the only automaker that will call Hong Kong home,” he added.

Infiniti is working to grab 10 percent of global luxury sales by 2016 - a goal that will include a line-up of more than 10 different models, compared to seven in the current range.

Among the brand's new models will be the recently-revealed JX seven-seat SUV, and an upcoming electric luxury sedan.
