Japanese luxury brand Infiniti has released the first images and details of its medium QX50 Concept SUV which will make its public debut next week at the Detroit Auto Show.

Though offered in international markets since 2007, first as the EX35 and EX37, then later as the QX50, Infiniti’s crossover competes with prestige SUVs including the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC.

In the case of the 2017 QX50 Concept, the Detroit show star previews the styling of the second generation medium SUV, and closely follows the styling themes set by the QX Sport Inspiration concept which first appeared at the Beijing Auto Show in 2016.

Up front the QX50 wears a high-set double-arch grille, flanked by slim set of the brand’s human eye headlamps, with simple vertical bumper intakes at each side of the front bumper.

Along the body sides the QX50 Concept runs a pronounced shoulder crease between the head and tail lights, with a more subtle version of Infiniti’s back-swept crescent D-pillar design leading into wrap-over tailgate glass. A vented rear bumper, front and rear bash plates round out the QX50 Concept’s ruggedised looks.

As well as providing a detailed look at the new QX50, the Concept also outlines Infiniti’s “autonomous drive support” technologies - a system of semi-automated drive-assist features which Infiniti claims are designed to work with the driver, rather than replacing them.

For less exciting driving tasks, like driving through grinding stop-start commutes, monitoring surrounding traffic, and highway cruising the system is able to take control, handing back full control for greater driving engagement in more enjoyable situations.

"With the unveiling of the QX Sport Inspiration at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show, we showed the future of Infiniti QX models,” said Roland Krueger, President of Infiniti

“The new QX50 Concept evolves this concept further and shows how Infiniti could develop its future presence in the fastest-growing vehicle segment globally."

The QX50 Concept will also share the show stand with Infiniti’s 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol variable compression ratio (or VC-Turbo) engine concept, which promises high performance with frugal consumption akin to a diesel engine, though has stopped short of linking the availability of the VC-Turbo engine to a production version of the QX50.
