Nissan vice president Andy Palmer has reportedly confirmed that a new QX30 compact SUV is in the works.

Sitting alongside the already high-riding Q30 hatch due to launch next year, the QX30 would take on the likes of Audi’s Q3 and the BMW X1.

Likewise, the (slightly) lower Q30 will rival the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and other premium compacts.

The two new Infiniti offerings are expected to utilise the powertrains and ‘MFA’ platform of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and GLA, as part of Renault Nissan’s ongoing technical alliance with Daimler.

"When you buy into premium, the platform needs to be stiffer, the suspension needs to be better, the NVH (noise-vibration-harshness) needs to be better, and that’s where we came to the agreement that we would use the MFA platform,” Palmer told industry paper Automotive News this week.

Palmer said that the new crossover will enter production in the second half of 2015 - suggesting a concept could appear as soon as October’s Paris Motor Show.

In the scope of the Infiniti range, the QX30 would enter below the midsized QX50 and the larger QX60, QX70 and QX80 models.

Both models will be built at Nissan’s Sunderland plant in England, where production capacity has been increased by around 60,000 units to accommodate the small Infiniti pair.

Palmer also revealed that a global launch schedule is intended for both models.

"We plan to supply the Q30 and QX30 globally from Sunderland including to the United States and China,” Palmer told the paper.

Pricing for the new models is of course still to be revealed, although Palmer reportedly hinted that “the equivalent offerings from Audi” could be used as a guide.
