Infiniti’s QX Sport Inspiration concept has taken to the stands at the Beijing Auto Show, previewing a new midsized premium SUV.

Described by its maker as “an elegant and powerful expression of progressive SUV design”, the Sport Inspiration is the first clue to a ‘QX50’ model, new to markets outside Japan.

Infiniti is keeping the drivetrain details under wraps for now, but the Q50 sedan’s four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, along with the V6 petrol-hybrid, could all potentially feature in the production version.

The QX50 would join the smaller QX30, unveiled late last year, along with the QX70 and QX80 in Infiniti’s SUV range.

The concept measures 4600mm long, 1900mm wide and 1650m high, with a wheelbase of 2800mm. Infiniti says its 230mm ground clearance means the SUV can handle some off-road driving, and all-wheel-drive models will almost certainly be offered on the road-going version.

Exterior highlights include a rear diffuser incorporating the exhaust outlets, guard vents designed to extract air from the front wheel wells and rear-facing cameras in place of conventional side mirrors.

Inside, there’s a five-seat layout with a black-and-white theme, a combination of hard and soft leathers and a panoramic glass roof.

"The QX Sport Inspiration comes at a time when Infiniti continues to expand its product portfolio globally into new and popular segments,” Infiniti’s Francois Bancon said.

“We design concept cars with true production potential, and the QX Sport Inspiration offers a vision of how Infiniti could bring something exciting and new to the midsized SUV segment."

Stay tuned for more.
