INFINITI AUSTRALIA PRICE CUTS

Nissan's luxury marque Infiniti has had a slow first year in Australia. It has sold just 170 cars year-to-date, and, in July, managed just a paltry 18 sales.

With 2012-plated cars still in dealerships, something had to give. Now, a year on from launch, the carmaker has responded with deep price cuts across its line-up, starting from a whopping $7500 in the FX range.

Of course, with just three model lines at launch - none of them brand-new - and less than a handful of dealerships, the brand was never going to fly out of the gate.

Did Infiniti make its move on Australia too soon? Its models have tested well with TMR - the G37 in particular - but with new models in the pipeline, the brand might have been best served by waiting.

Despite a competitive standard equipment list at launch in 2012, the line-up has crawled through its first year without a single enhancement - while rivals Lexus, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi have rolled out numerous updates.

With pricing now perhaps better aligned to customer expectations, Infiniti will be hoping to return some energy to the brand.

The cuts are described as "the next stage of its local market growth plans", introduced ahead of the new Q50 sedan's arrival later this year.

“Infiniti’s Australian launch in 2012 was characterised by opening the first Infiniti Retail Centres; releasing the first four models in our new-vehicle range; and delivering a new level of customer service and hospitality,” Infiniti Australia boss Kevin Snell said today.

“Now we’re moving into the next stage where we fine-tune our offerings to accelerate our growth, introduce additional models such as the all-new Infiniti Q50 premium sports sedan, and expand our retail network.”

Savings in the G37 range alone start at $10,000 on both convertible offerings, while the list prices of the two coupe models have been slashed by $11,500 and $13,100.

Cuts in the M sedan line range from $9500 to $11,500, while the FX SUV - Infiniti's most popular model - has slashed between $7500 and $10,000 from list prices.

For the M sedan, the new pricing means that buyers will step into a 235kW V6-powered large sedan for a little less than its 135kW four-cylinder BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz rivals.

For some, that difference alone could prove to be the deciding factor.
