Hyundai Veloster Turbo Spied Testing Ahead Of Australian Debut

Hyundai's range-topping Veloster turbo, powered by the carmaker's new 1.6 litre turbocharged T-GDI engine, has been spied testing in Europe this week.

Developing 152kW and 265Nm of torque, the T-GDI engine will give the Veloster the beans to compete with Volkswagen's Golf GTI, although it falls a little short of the 188kW mill powering the Scirocco R and Golf R headliners.

Whether the turbo Veloster will get styling and aero tweaks is unclear, although the heavy front- and rear-end camouflage on this test car suggests we might see big intakes and a rear diffuser.

Hyundai Australia has confirmed a local debut for the turbocharged Veloster but with no firm date attached. We can likely expect it to arrive some months after the launch of the regular 102kW variant.

The turbo Veloster will certainly have some sitting up and taking notice: if it has the handling to match the turbo's output, it could be a game-changer for Hyundai in terms of buyer-perception.
