Hyundai has pooled the talent at its Californian design and engineering centre to produce a new high-powered concept for this month's SEMA show in Las Vegas.

Dubbed Velocity, the new showcar is built on the Veloster Turbo hatch, with power boosted from 150kW to a huge 298kW - all from Hyundai's 1.6 litre turbo engine.

Hyundai called on the expertise of Britain's Cosworth to wring the engine's neck, adding new pistons and rods, a new turbocharger and intercooler, intake manifold and intake charging setup, while upgrading the fuel and engine management systems.

Torque is also up as a result, growing from 265 to 475Nm.

Styling and handling tweaks will include Bilstein springs and monotube dampers, four-piston Brembo brakes with two-piece discs, and 19-inch wheels.

There's also a big rear wing and all-round diffuser package, along with a leather/suede combo interior and a roll cage.

“In creating Velocity, we were inspired to take the Veloster’s original concept strengths to their fullest expression,” Hyundai's Chris Chapman said.

“Velocity gave our design and engineering teams license to take Veloster far beyond everyday production car limitations.”
