Hyundai has announced a new turbocharged variant of the 1.6 litre Gamma petrol engine, along with a Euro VI compliant 2.0 litre R-Series turbodiesel.

The 1.6 turbo is based on the engine used by the Hyundai Accent, Veloster and Kia Rio. The new unit employs a twin-scroll turbocharger, air-to-air intercooler, direct injection and variable valve timing to produce 152kW and 265Nm. Not bad for a mere 1.6 litre.

Officially dubbed the Gamma 1.6 T-GDI, the turbo four-cylinder is Euro V compliant and is set to enter service in a number of Hyundai and Kia models  - including the Veloster - from mid-2012.

Whether it makes its way to our shores has yet to be determined, however there is a high level of interest within Hyundai Australia for a turbocharged powertrain.

An updated version of the 2.0 litre R-Series diesel engine will also be rolled out across the Hyundai and Kia ranges soon, boasting improved efficiency to make it compliant with Euro VI emissions legislation.

With 111kW  and 382Nm, obvious recipients for the new diesel include the Kia Sportage and Hyundai ix35, although the next-generation Santa Fe may also make use of the 2.0 R Diesel.
