Hyundai is reportedly nearing a decision to enter the pickup utility game, where it would take on the likes of Toyota’s HiLux and the Ford Ranger.

A new report with Reuters claims that unnamed sources from within the Korean carmaker have confirmed that there is significant interest within Hyundai for a line of pickup models.

Hyundai most recently hinted at plans for the hot-selling segment when it unveiled the well-received Santa Cruz concept at January’s Detroit Auto Show.

The Santa Cruz is presented as a compact crossover designed to sit been the SUV and pickup segments, aimed more at “urban adventurers” than hardcore commercial duties.

Nonetheless, it is clear the styling direction buyers can expect Hyundai to head in if it eventually gives the green light to Santa Cruz and larger open-backed utilities.
