Hyundai has joined the list of carmakers showcasing new models for the Chinese market this week, unveiling its Mistra concept in China.
Designed as a new midsized offering, the Mistra is expected to slot (or squeeze, barely - Ed) into the space between the small Elantra and the larger Sonata, both already on sale in China.
Unlike the Elantra and Sonata (previously the i45 in Australia), the Mistra wears a smoothed-out design language that could preview a new global direction.
Gone are Hyundai's wavy headlights, swooping character lines and gaping grills, replaced with a more conservative face and profile; both a nod to preferences in the Chinese market.
We won't see the Mistra in Australia, but it is likely that - as with the sharp new Santa Fe SUV - elements of the sedan's styling will creep into new models destined for the west.
There's no word yet on the Mistra's drivetrains, but likely options include a naturally aspirated 1.8 litre four cylinder or a 1.6 litre turbocharged four.
