Hyundai has announced a new lifetime capped-price servicing program for every model in its range - including any sold since the brand first hit Australia in 1986.

The offer includes all cars, SUVs and light commercial vehicles sold across the brand’s Australian history, which passed the 1 million sales milestone in 2012.

Effective from September 1, the new schedule joins the brand’s five-year new vehicle warranty as part of the iCare program launched two years ago.

Today’s announcement also brings news that Hyundai has extended its Roadside Assist service from seven to 10 years.

Existing owners already covered by Hyundai’s previous three-year capped-price service program will continue with that arrangement however, switching over to the new lifetime coverage afterwards.

The service will be integrated into a new online booking service to be rolled out over the coming months, Hyundai says, with customers directed to a dealer-specific website to choose a service time and arrange a loan car.

“Ultimately, servicing any car is an inconvenience - there’s no getting away from that,” Hyundai Australia COO John Elsworth said.

“But with capped service prices for life, which are transparent and easy to see, and a new online service booking system, we hope to reduce that inconvenience as much as possible.”

Prices for the new lifetime capped-price program will be confirmed on September 1, but it is understood that the first three annual services will increase slightly in price, while the fourth - generally the more comprehensive service - will be reduced significantly.

Capped-price servicing is proving a strong marketing point for carmakers in Australia. Hyundai joins Subaru in offering a lifetime capped-price program, and Mazda introduced its own unique Service Select program this year.

Citroen expanded its limited six-year warranty and capped-price service program to its full range in July, which followed Ford's extended seven-year program announced in March.

In the case of the upgraded iCare service, TMR understands that this new expanded program is funded by Hyundai Australia to the tune of $12 million annually, subsidising the first five annual services.

Where the first three services on a small Hyundai had previously cost $189 each and the fourth at $500, the new plan is expected to see those rise, and fall, to $229 and $329 respectively.

Hyundai says its pricing, combined with annual/15-month intervals, makes its smaller models more affordable to service than rivals like the Yaris, Fiesta, Barina and stablemate Kia's light Rio
