A Hyundai ix35 powered by hydrogen fuel cells has landed in Australia, and the Korean carmaker says it’s here to stay.

That makes it the first hydrogen-powered car from a major carmaker to be permanently based in Australia, and Hyundai will use it for testing and demonstrating purposes starting early next year.

Green-car enthusiasts may be asking where Hyundai plans to get the hydrogen to refuel it, but the Korean carmaker plans to install its own refuelling station.

The ‘bowser’ will be located at Hyundai’s Macquarie Park headquarters in Sydney, and will be another ‘hydrogen first’ for Australia.

“In February 2013, Hyundai became the first automobile manufacturer in the world to begin mass-production of a hydrogen-powered vehicle - the ix35 Fuel Cell,” Hyundai Australia CEO, Charlie Kim, said.

“This gave [us] the ability to order a fuel cell electric vehicle in the same way as we order any other new Hyundai car. Now we have one, and we believe this fantastic car will help demonstrate the potential of hydrogen as a green transport solution for Australia.”
