A new teaser illustration released this week previews the upcoming Hyundai i40 sedan. This follows the unveiling of its wagon counterpart earlier this year.

The i40 sedan is expected to be slightly smaller than the i45 mid-sizer offered in Australia, bringing a sportier option to the company's passenger car line-up.

“We have used very strong, fluid lines from front to rear to give i40 a distinctive appearance,” Thomas Bürkle, Chief Designer at Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre said.

“We wanted to move away from the typical three-box sedan and create a car that was in keeping with the sporty nature of the i40 wagon. By sculpting a low, elongated roof line, we’ve given the i40 sedan a striking coupe-like silhouette,” he added.

Unlike the i45 sedan, the i40 models were designed and developed at Hyundai's European headquarters in Rüsselsheim, Germany.

At this stage, only the i40w wagon has been confirmed for an Australian debut, expected later this year. Its arrival will complement the larger i45 sedan as the company moves to compete with the wagon versions of the Liberty, Mondeo and Mazda6.

Hyundai Australia however has now confirmed that the sedan version is also under consideration.

“We are still reviewing the business case for bringing the i40 sedan to Australia. We are hoping to make a decision later in the year,” Hyundai Australia's Director of Marketing, Oliver Mann said.

While the wagon fills an obvious gap, it remains to be seen how Hyundai Australia will differentiate the i40 and i45 sedans in Australia.

Australian specifications for the wagon are still to be confirmed. In Europe, the i40 wagon is offered with a 99kW 1.6 litre and 130kW 2.0 litre GDi petrol engine, along with 85kW and 100kW versions of Hyundai's 1.7 litre 'U2' diesel engines.

The world premiere of the all-new i40 sedan will take place at the Barcelona Motor Show at 12:20 (CET) on Thursday 12th May 2011.
