Hyundai’s new i20 Active SUV, spied testing February and teased in sketches earlier this month, has now been been revealed.
Developed specifically for the Indian market, the i20 Active enters as a jacked-up and enhanced version of the regular new i20 hatch launched earlier this year in overseas markets.
As a compact SUV, the i20 Active gets a taller suspension package, ruggedised guard protection and new bumpers with small skid plates at both ends.
The i20 Active will be offered in front-wheel-drive form only, making it more of a tall hatch than a genuine ‘suburban utility vehicle’.
Powertrain options in India will include five-speed manual 66kW/220Nm 1.4 diesel and a six-speed manual 61kW/114Nm 1.2 petrol units.
A wider launch for the i20 Active is not expected to occur, with Hyundai believed to be developing a uniquely styled compact SUV for Europe and other western markets.
Watch for Hyundai to make its assault on the hugely popular compact SUV market in the next year or two.
