Hyundai has announced that former Head Of Exterior And Advanced Design at Bentley, SangYup Lee, is joining the Korean carmaker’s team from next month.
Lee will become the new Vice President Of Styling at Hyundai’s Design Centre, primary involved with furthering Hyundai’s new stand-alone luxury Genesis brand.
Hyundai says Lee will play a “leading role in design, strategy, direction and innovation”, stretching as far as colour strategies and material selection, alongside Senior Vice President Luc Donckerwolke.
“The innovative design and surprising growth of Hyundai Motor has always made me proud as a Korean while I worked overseas,” Lee said.
“Now, I want to contribute in creating world-leading automobile designs for both Hyundai Motor and the Genesis brand.”
Donckerwolke said Lee’s previous experiences would be a good match for Hyundai and Genesis.
“[Lee] has proven himself as one of the world’s best automobile designers in the global platform. His design philosophy to pursue new challenges and innovations matches the DNA of Hyundai Motor,” Luc Donckerwolke said.
Lee has qualifications from both Hongik University’s Department of Sculpture in Korea and the Art Centre College of Design in California.
The designer has worked for the likes of Pininfarina, where he began his career, along with the Porsche Design Centre.
Lee also worked for General Motors and Volkswagen, before joining Bentley at the end of 2012.
