The finalists have been announced for the automotive category in this year's Australian International Design Awards, with Hyundai, Kia, Peugeot and Ford all in contention.

For 2011, Hyundai's upcoming all-new Elantra will face off against its Kia stablemate, the recently-launched Optima.

Peugeot will look to double its chances with the 3008 SUV and RCZ coupe, while the Australian industry is represented by the locally-developed 2012 Ford Ranger twin-cab ute.

"Our esteemed judges spent a week assessing each entry against a common set of criteria, focusing on innovation, form, function, quality, safety and sustainability," Brandon Gien, Managing Director of Good Design Australia said.

"Judges played with, tested, pulled apart and reassembled products to create an accurate user experience and understand each product's design qualities."

Presented by Standards Australia, the Australian International Design Awards is open to all professionally-designed products available in the domestic market.

The competition has been open to international products since 2008, and automotive winners since then have included the Peugeot 308 Touring, the Honda Civic Type R, the Hyundai i45, the Audi A5 Sportback, the Volkswagen Passat CC and Eos, and the Nissan Murano.

Australian winners in the automotive category have included the Ford XE Falcon, the AU Falcon and the more recent Territory SUV, along with the Holden VE Commodore Sportswagon and Ute, the Holden VT Commodore and the Commodore-based Monaro, and the Holden Statesman.

The winners of the 2011 Australian International Design Awards will be announced in Melbourne on July 22.
